medical causes for retinal artery thrombosis

retinal artery thrombosis is a rare condition in which a blood clot forms in the artery that supplies blood to the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. The most common cause of retinal artery thrombosis is atherosclerosis, a build-up of plaque in the blood vessels. Other causes include:

  • Blood disorders, such as hypercoagulable states, where the blood clots too easily.
  • Systemic diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa, sarcoidosis, and giant cell arteritis.
  • Trauma to the eye or surrounding area.
  • Recent surgery or trauma to the head and neck.
  • Emboli from a cardiac source such as a heart valve disease or atrial fibrillation.
  • Certain medications, such as oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy.
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Advanced age
  • It's important to note that retinal artery thrombosis is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention. If not treated quickly, it can lead to permanent vision loss in the affected eye.
